Character: Takashi "Shiro" Shirogane
Age: 25
Canon: Voltron: Legendary Defender
Canon Point: Episode 9, right after ejecting Sendak
Background: http://voltron.wikia.com/wiki/Shiro
Personality: Shiro is a natural-born leader. He excels at keeping a cool head in stressful situations, acting quickly and decisively, and knowing when to take charge. He remains cognizant that he's part of a team, however, and is not the sort of leader who bulldozes over his troops or commands respect through fear. He is supportive and considerate to his teammates--when Lance defers the decision on whether or not to travel through the wormhole in the first episode to him, Shiro's response is that they're a team and should decide together what to do. When the team is divided on whether or not to flee Arus or stay and fight, rather than break the tie with his own opinion, he defers it to Allura's more experienced view. Which is also not to say he's incapable of putting his foot down--he frequently shuts down Lance's ridiculousness before it goes too far, and as a more serious example, refuses to let Allura go into a Galra ship alone even though she technically outranks him.
Overall, though, he views his role as leader as more of a supportive role than a superior one. He's there to give his team the guidance they need to be the best they can be--there's a reason his fandom nickname is Space Dad. Because guiding them to be the best they can be doesn't just mean guiding them to be the best fighters they can be. He's understanding of Pidge placing priority on finding her family and while he gently encourages her to reconsider her decision when she wants to leave Team Voltron, he very pointedly does not try to stop her, because as he tells Keith, you can't force someone to be part of a team. As a close teammate of Pidge's family, he knows her real name and gender before everyone else does, and when he lets her know that he does, he also immediately reassures her that he won't tell anyone. And when she finally reveals it on her own terms, he's calmly proud, saying that owning who she is will make her stronger. Pidge gets the, no pun intended, lion's share of the support for a lot of reasons (she's the youngest, he knows her family, her family has been missing for a year, etc., etc.) but he's still a balancing force and emotional support for the others, as well.
Which is a little unfortunate, because Shiro is not quite as emotionally and mentally stable as he first seems. As a result of his year in Galra imprisonment, he suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder. (Admittedly he has not received an official diagnosis, but given that he has repressed memories and vivid hallucinatory flashbacks triggered by stimuli reminiscent of the events, if it's not PTSD, it's something very similar.) He does a remarkably good job of managing it unassisted, but that hardly means it doesn't affect his life. As mentioned, he has hallucinatory flashbacks, and given that most of his time with the Galra was spent as a gladiator, these flashbacks tend to be triggered by combat situations. While experiencing a flashback, he shuts down and becomes unresponsive, so overall, it is pretty bad when it happens. Thankfully, his flashbacks tend to be brief, with one rather notable exception. What makes the lengthy flashback so interesting is that partway through it, he starts communicating with his teammates, but the footage continues to show the events of the past, and the Shiro shown in the flashback is animated as speaking when Shiro talks--the implication therein being that Shiro is still experiencing the flashback but has pulled himself together just enough to be able to talk with his team. This demonstrates an incredible level of willpower and self-control, but also, it's a feat I don't think he could've accomplished if he wasn't part of a team in the first place.
This is why Shiro's role as leader and his emotional connection with his team bears so much emphasis, because Shiro is a very people-focused person, and a great deal of his stability comes from the simple fact that he has people relying on him to be stable--he simply can't afford to be falling apart on the regular. Though he also draws comfort simply from being around normal people he knows he can trust not to try and kill him, that does wonders for his mental state as well. When Shiro's alone or even just kind of separate from his team, that's when signs of anxiety and paranoia tend to arise. He gets antsy about letting the harmless Arusians into the castle, and when he tries to interrogate Sendak on his own, the results are disastrous. Overall, though, he maintains an impressive level of stability and calm, and sometimes, under the right circumstances, he can even manage to relax a little, bless his heart.
Abilities: Shiro has some sort of training in hand-to-hand combat and has a great deal of experience with the same on top of it. His right arm has been replaced with a mechanical prosthesis by the Galra. The arm does not seem any stronger than normal, but the hand is capable of emitting powerful energy (presumably quintessence) capable of cutting through or melting metal. It can also interface with Galra technology, but that is not very likely to come up here.
Alignment: Thras. You can't say that leading such a small group against a massive evil empire doesn't take some serious courage, especially after said evil empire has already given you enough trauma to last a lifetime.
